Description

This busy intersection should have an automatic pedestrian crossing signal that doesn't require a button push to be activated. I've seen multiple cars honk at or nearly run over children who are already in the intersection at a green light. These pedestrians have a right to cross at a green light, and these cars should yield to these pedestrians. Pedestrians who get to the intersection shortly after the light turns green and who press the pedestrian walk signal need to wait for the intersection light to run through a full cycle before the pedestrian walk signal turns on. This discourages pedestrians from having right of way at the intersection. An automatic pedestrian crossing signal, when the light is green, increases safety and reminds cars to always yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. Given the high-traffic nature of this intersection and its proximity to downtown (a high-pedestrian activity area), we should adjust our traffic signals to increase the visibility of pedestrians walking.
