Description

This message concerns case #19858147, which was originally submitted on August 27, 2025 and responded to by the city that same day (thank you!). The issue involves a sinkhole on our private street, located between the city’s water main and the residence at 8178 West Mercer. We appreciate the city’s prompt response at that time — your team inspected the area, found no visible signs of leakage, and concluded that the cause was likely gravel settling due to improper compaction.
Following further discussions within our neighborhood group, I’m writing to respectfully request that the city re-examine the site for three reasons: 1. The age of the road: The road and its underlying gravel base have been in place for decades, making it unlikely that a sinkhole from poor compaction would appear now. 2. The location of the sinkhole: While improper compaction is possible, it seems improbable that such a failure would coincidently occur directly in line with the city’s water pipe leading to 8178 West Mercer. 3. Timing of upcoming roadwork: Our neighborhood has scheduled a private contractor to patch our street in November, and it would be prudent to rule out a potential leak before the contractor’s one-day repair job.
We are genuinely grateful for your team’s responsiveness and professionalism. Our concern is that, for the reasons above, a leak seems plausible — and we hope to avoid a situation where the city could be asked to respond urgently while our contractor is on-site for a 1-day job.
Could the city please excavate or further investigate the area around the sinkhole to confirm whether a leak is present?
Thank you for your time and continued support.
 Respectfully,
Mark Bolger
on behalf of the residents of Lower Lakeridge Heights
