Description

I am writing this to make the City of Mercer Island MORE aware of the critically dangerous intersection at East Mercer Way and Butterworth Road. We have lived in the same home on Butterworth Road since 1978, and have never had a serious issue until recently. Within our own household of two individuals, however, we have experienced two “close calls” within the past six weeks. I believe that vegetation growth over time combined with the vigorous springtime vegetation growth has created this worsening situation. Recently discussing this with just two other households, I am aware that both have experienced similar close calls. We have spoken to the owners of the home at that intersection, and they expressed a reluctance to trim back any more vegetation because it acts as a noise buffer for vehicular traffic that literally circles around three sides of their property. We have explored installing a mirror at the intersection; however, the City has informed us that any such installation must be on private property and absolutely cannot be installed on pubic property. Although there is no way for me to determine exactly where the dividing line is between private and public property, I have studied the intersection, and there does not appear to be any private property where a mirror could be installed. At this point I am not sure what measures we, as private citizens, can do to improve the safety of this obviously dangerous intersection. We need a solution to this problem before a close call becomes a tragedy, and therefore ask for a recommendation from the City of what we can and should do rather than just being told what we may not do.
