Description

Hello, I live on 78th Ave SE with my family including two elementary aged kids. One of the lovely benefits of where we live is that we can walk or bike to town, Mercerdale Park, the Farmers Market, etc. However, I am often scared for our lives while traveling by foot, bike, scooter, or roller skates on 78th Ave SE. As it’s a major thoroughfare and straight away from town to SE 40th St and West Mercer where many people speed well above the 30 mph limit. The MI police force has a regular presence however that has not deterred speeding in my experience. I deeply implore the City Council to further assess 78th Ave SE between the Thift Store and 40th to assess if and how many speed bumps should be implemented. As I sit on my balcony and watch children, teens, and community members walk, bike, and skateboard to town and parks, I am fearful for their lives. We want to keep Mercer Island a safe place to live. Thank you for considering. Concerned citizen, Dr. Jessica Hawley Jessica.e.hawley@gmail.com
